In an article on the successes and challenges posed by the European Year of Citizens, published on September 3rd 2013 in the daily newspaper « La Libre Belgique », Serge Kollwelter, the AEDH’s honorary chairman, comments on the irony of reducing the funds allocated to the « Europe for Citizens » programme during the European Year of Citizens. Many organisations share this position, which has already lead them to address a letter signed by about one hundred organisations to the members of the European Council in June.
As a result, the AEDH’s honorary chairman says: « I understand the need to reduce costs, given the current economic situation. But for us, this is a clear political signal. The European institutions are constantly referring to citizenship, while simultaneously cutting back on our tools to improve it. »
