Dear friends and partners,
As part of our efforts regarding Cairo +20, MdM launched an initiative to physicians by offering to sign a call for the right to abortion in the world. It aims to make a link with the call of the 331 (manifest signed by doctors in 1973 for the right to abortion in France) and to demonstrate that 40 years later, many doctors are convinced of the universality of this right, and are ready to mobilize (again) in defense of this right at international level. The call will be published in September in the week before the special session of the General Assembly devoted to the 20 years of the Cairo program of action. The signatures will be published in the largest magazine in France, the Nouvel Observateur (about 600,000 copies per week). Attached, you can find the call to sign in French, English and Spanish. You can also find it on our European blog, www.mdmeuroblog.wordpress.com.
Physicians (and national & international associations representing physicians) wishing to join the call must give by September 10th, their country, name and title (as they wish it appears, their specialty) at the following address: firstname.lastname@example.org.
PS. If for security reasons (because of national legislation) some physicians do not want their name to be published, we would still be happy to only register your specialty. In that case we will write for example “10 GPs and 15 gynecologists in country X who cannot give their names because of the law.”
Not a doctor? You can still help!
We have chosen to limit the signatures to physicians (to echo the call of the 331), but we can all contribute to the success of this initiative in disseminating this call.
Also, you can still send an e-card to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to express your agreement with the above call: take a look at www.names-not-numbers.org
