19 October 2010 - The EDPS questions the necessity and the proportionality of PNR data transfers to third countries

The EDPS welcomes the European Commission’s communication on PNR (Passenger Name Records) data which proposes to adopt a global and horizontal approach on the issue of PNR data transfers to third countries. However, the EDPS is still concerned about the necessity and proportionality of the foreseen measures.

According to the EDPS, the conditions of collection and processing of PNR data should be restricted as to respect the European standards on data protection and in order to limit the risk of profiling.
