The EDPS gives its opinion on the data protection reform – 14 January 2011

On January 14th 2011, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) released an opinion on the Communication from the Commission “A comprehensive approach on personal data protection in the European Union” (COM (2010) 609).

While EDPS is welcoming the Commission’s attempt to revise the legal framework, it also puts forward the need to strengthen both individual rights and data protection authorities’ powers, enhancing the idea of a progressive inclusion of police and justice cooperation in the data protection field.
