4 March 2010 - EDPS warns about the potential incompatibility of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement with EU data protection regime

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) adopted the opinion in which he is “concerned as regards a potential incompatibility between envisaged measures and data protection requirements” concerning the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), secretly negotiated between different States, which includes the United States and the European Union.

The entering into force of this agreement would be an unacceptable breach of privacy, individual liberties and data protection. Many MEPs protested against this agreement and against the terms of negotiation.

AEDH is opposed to this agreement and calls for a mobilisation both against the secrecy of the negotiations outside of any democratic debate and against the content of the agreement itself.
