AEDH signs a joint public statement on the Greek citizenship reform - 30 January 2011

i-RED, 10 members of the RED Network combating racism and Xenophobia, the Greek Forum of Migrants, Asante, 12 migrant communities and the Refugee Forum in Greece, the European Network Against Racism, the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM), the Migrants’ Rights Network and the AEDH (Association Europeenne des Droits de l’Homme), express their support to the Greek citizenship reform and to those migrants who wish to participate to the Greek and European societies as citizens with rights and obligations, pursuing their constitutional aims, by respecting and sharing human rights and civic values.

AEDH’s response to the Green Paper of the European Commission on the application of EU criminal justice legislation in the field of detention - 30 November 2011

AEDH welcomes the initiative of the European Commission to publish a Green paper on detention and puts forward a constructive and broad response to the public consultation in order to spark off a debate at the European level on this important matter of deprivation of liberty in the European Union.

Foreign workers in the EU : moving towards multiple standards, founded on unequal treatment? - 17 October 2011

The AEDH finds the legislative package on labour immigration unacceptable in its current form because it undermines social rights and equal treatment. It also disagrees with the general underlying logic of the texts, which fragment the labour market and exploit regular immigration for European growth and as a tool against irregular immigration.

AEDH supports the documentary film "Ceuta, sweet prison" - 21 September 2011

AEDH supports an initiative launched by the Zaradoc documentary production company which aims at finishing the production of a documentary film of 52 minutes entitled “Ceuta, sweet prison”, directed by Jonathan Millet and Loïc H. Rechi.

This film tackles the situation of Ceuta, this Spanish enclave in the north part of Morocco, which belongs to Europe but does not belong to the Schengen area. The film deals with the construction of the wall built by Europeans to prevent migrants from entering the EU and with the situation of migrants who have been able to go over the wall but who are now waiting in Ceuta, sometimes during years, to find a way to access the EU which constitutes a dreamland for them.

Maryse Artiguelong – who is the deputy General Secretary of the French Human Rights League (LDH) and an individual member of AEDH in charge of dealing with issues related to data protection – spoke on behalf on AEDH at the occasion of the “Freedom not Fear” demonstration held in Brussels on September 17th 2011.

Anthology "Practices of imprisonment in Europe and Human rights: is exclusion the only solution?" - 14 September 2011

AEDH organized, on the occasion of its 2011 General Assembly together with ALOS-LDH its member league from Luxembourg, a seminar entitled "Practices of imprisonment in Europe and Human rights: is exclusion the only solution?". This seminar was followed by a round-table for which several European experts gave a speech on the issue.

AEDH again participates in the Best of One World 2011, which will take place from May 17th until May 26th and which is organized by the One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, People in Need, in collaboration with the Permanent Representation of Czech Republic to the EU, the Czech Center, the Bozar Centre for Fine Arts, the Human Rights and Democracy Network (HRDN, whose AEDH is a member), the Permanent Representation of Poland to the EU, the Goethe Institute and the European Parliament.

AEDH participates in the writing of the report "Calais, the violence of the border" - 4 May 2011

AEDH participated in the writing of the report "Calais, the violence of the border", issued by the EMHRN Network which details the results of a fact-finding mission to Calais and the surrounding area in order to investigate impacts of the police clamp down on the situation of migrants and refugees rights in the region.

AEDH comments the CJEU El Dridi ruling - 28 April 2011

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) decided, on April 28th 2011, that prison term does not respect the 2008 “Return” European directive when irregular stay is the only motive.

EU Seasonal Migrant Workers’ Directive: Full Respect of Equal Treatment Necessary - 20 April 2011

A joint statement on the seasonal workers proposal for a directive, made by AEDH together with other NGOS, was released on April 20th 2011, at the occasion of a LIBE hearing on “Legal migration after the Lisbon treaty”.

AEDH response to the Council of Europe on the modernization of the Convention No 108 - 10 March 2011

The AEDH thanks the Council of Europe, not only for its initiative to update the Convention No 108, but also for the quality of its questionings regarding the current challenges. They are indeed very general first because of the place of new technologies in our life but also because of the rate, as well as the global nature, of inventions.

Security Scanners in EU Airports: Seeking the Mythical Absolute in Security - 15 February 2011

The AEDH is extremely concerned about the use of body scanners in Europe. After giving its opinion on the European Commission’s communication of 15 June 2010i, it would like to take this opportunity to express its position on the use of security scanners in general. Body, or "security", scanners have serious consequences for privacy and the protection of personal data. The need for such equipment, as well the implications of its use, must therefore be thoroughly evaluated.

AEDH reponse to the Commission’s consultation on a general approach to the protection of personal data in the EU - 15 January 2011

The AEDH welcomes the fact that the European Commission carries out a consultation on the modification of the 1995 Directive on data protection. The AEDH indeed thinks that it’s time to amend that Directive as to conform it with technologic changes that happened since 1995 and to comply with European and national developments in case law.

20 July 2010 - Europe, it’s TIME to ratify the Migrant Workers Convention

The International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families was signed 20 years ago by the UN General Assembly. However, none of the EU Members States has ratified it yet.

The Best of One World 2010 is organized this year by the One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the EU, People in Need, the Bozar Centre for Fine Arts and the Human Rights and Democracy Network (HRDN).

15 February 2010 - AEDH signs the text "towards a structured framework for European civil dialogue"

Article 11 of the amended Treaty on European Union makes participatory democracy a tool to strengthen the democratic legitimacy of the European Union and therefore a principle of governance, as a complement to representative democracy. Thus civil dialogue becomes one of the major tools in policy-shaping and decision-making processes at European level. The EU institutions are required to conduct "an open, transparent and regular dialogue with representative associations and civil society"

15 December 2009 - AEDH-EDRI European Civil Society Data Protection Award: Call for nominations opened

AEDH (European Association for the Defence of Human rights) and EDRI (European Digital Rights) launch the first edition of the European Civil Society Data Protection Award (ECSDPA). The prize aims at rewarding positive initiatives contributing to the visibility and effectiveness of right to privacy and to the protection of personal data in Europe. The ECSDPA prize will be awarded each year on 28 January, as a European Civil Society contribution to the Data Protection Day.

3 November 2009 - The AEDH has signed the civil society Declaration for "Global privacy standards for a Global World"

The AEDH has signed the civil society Declaration for “Global privacy standards for a Global world”. On November, 3rd, the AEDH will attend the conference organized by the Public Voice coalition in Madrid, on this topic.

19 June 2009 - ALOS LDH Luxembourg becomes a full member of the AEDH

Following the approval of the General Assembly on June, 19th 2009, the Luxemburg League for Human rights, ALOS-LDH, has become a full member of the AEDH.

AEDH TAKES ACTION FOR THE 2009 EUROPEAN ELECTIONS

From the 4th to the 7th of June, European citizens will elect their representants for the European Union. The European Parliament, composed by 785 MEPs, is the only European institution elected through direct universal suffrage. It’s the citizen’s voice in the EU legislative process.

By voting in the European elections in June you decide what the EU will be like for the 5 upcoming years.

On this occasion, the AEDH has prepared a series of cards in the form of question-answers on various key topics related to human rights, that it puts at the disposal of its members. Therefore, the AEDH invites the citizens and residents of the European Union to call on their candidates for the European elections on these sensible questions.

The anti-discrimination-towards-Roma helpline is now operating in Czech Republic
