Ales Bialiatski, sentenced to four and a half years of jail - 24 November 2011

Ales Bialiatski, president of the Belarusian Human Rights Center “Viasna” and vice-president of FIDH, was sentenced on Thursday 24 November to four and half years detention, the payment of a fine, as well as the confiscation of his property. AEDH condemns this arbitrary decision aiming at silencing this human rights defender, and encourages you to join the general mobilisation launched by FIDH and calling for its immediate and unconditional release.

Support Ales Bialiatski, Vice-president of FIDH, detained since August 4th 2011 - 24 October 2011

Ales Bialiatski, Vice President of the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) and Chairman of the Viasna Human Rights Center has been detained since August 4th in Belarus. Prosecuted for tax evasion, Ales Bialiatski was sentenced to three to seven years in prison. The International Community is mobilizing around him, as a symbol of the struggle for the rights of the Belarusian people.

November, 18th 2008 - HRDN: Manifesto on Human rights for the 2009 new European Parliament

Human rights obligations are enshrined in the treaty basis of the EU. The EU has created a number of instruments to protect and fulfil human rights at home and abroad. Building on this, the new European Parliament should push the EU to do much more to ensure that it delivers effectively on its human rights commitment. The manifesto is available in French, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Polish and Czech.
